We haven’t even started cutting mooncakes yet, but wintery classic, The Nutcracker, tries giving us a slice of Christmas up until 10 September 2017. Gateway Entertainment and P’ART 1 Design Pte Ltd came together to recreate a version of this internationally staged piece, involving super high tech equipment and lots of flashing lights.
The experience is as sensory as it is imaginative. While The Nutcracker is a favourite ballet classic for my better half and I, we’d be better prepared knowing it held some elements and familiar framework of The Nutcracker, but that the rest of it was mostly… reimagined.
Many overwhelming elements were at play; music, sound, and very bright lights amidst lovely sets for magic tricks – Joseph and his technicolour coat would pale in comparison!
Magic and the enigma of what lies beyond dark curtains and smoke is always enough to interest audiences. And having been awarded the 2010 Elite Diamond Merlin Award, there is no contention for this wondrously ever-dramatic magician.
Multi-media does wonders with decisive direction – like The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time on WestEnd. Credit is definitely due to the team for braving an ambitious concept, as they have certainly come a long, long way from Magic Of Love.
Warning: Show includes high-powered flashing lights. Photosensitive viewers and those with epilepsy/ seizures, please take due precaution.
